His Eminence, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President
Cardinal, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture and of the Pontifical Commissions for the Cultural Goods of the Church and Sacred Archaeology.
Born in 1942 at Merate (Lecco), he is an expert on the Bible and biblical languages and was previously the Prefect of the Ambrosian Library of Milan. He taught Old Testament Exegesis at the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy.
His vast output includes one hundred and fifty volumes, principally on biblical matters: critical editions and commentaries on the Psalms, the Book of Job, the Song of Songs and the Book of Wisdom. He is well known by the general public for his works : Breve storia dell’anima (Mondadori, 2003), Le sorgenti di Dio (San Paolo, 2005), Ritorno alle virtù (Mondadori, 2005), Le porte del peccato (Mondatori, 2007), 500 curiosità della fede (Mondatori, 2009), Questioni di fede (Mondadori 2010).
Cardinal Ravasi collaborates with newspapers – for fifteen years the daily Avvenire and currently now with L’Osservatore Romano and Il Sole 24 Ore. He also works in television and has his own Sunday slot on the mainstream Canale 5 in the rubric Le frontiere dello Spirito.
